TOKYO—The head of Japan’s biggest bank says after four months on the job that he’s dismayed by the number of internal meetings he has to attend.

Kanetsugu Mike, a Wharton School graduate who heads the core banking unit of Mitsubishi UFJ Financial Group Inc., said he wanted a shakeup to make his bankers more productive, part of a plan to boost group operating profit by nearly $3 billion over the next six years.
